TRAILS Ecca Nature Reserve covers 126 ha of rugged country and is famous for its fossils, notably those of the reptile Mesosaurus which were discovered by the nineteenth-century geologist A.G. Bain. Information plinths along the trail describe aspects of interest. The vegetation comprises dense, semi-succulent, thorny scrub, and tree euphorbias, aloes and spekboom are abundant. Kudu, bushbuck, steenbok and common duiker occur, and rock dassies are often seen. Location: Southern part of the region; north-east of Grahamstown. Access: From Grahamstown follow the N2 in the direction of King William's Town for about 3 km; then turn left onto the R67 in the direction of Fort Beaufort. Ecca Nature Reserve is located on the west side of the road at Ecca Pass, about 5 km north of the N2. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: Market trail, picnic site. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
